How Do Sexually Transmitted Infections Can Affect You and Your Loved Ones in an Ever-Changing World That We Live In

Simply put sexually transmitted infections or sexually transmitted diseases are types of infections one gets through sexual contact with another person. It doesn’t matter if your straight, gay, bisexual, pansexual, poly, etc. Everyone who engages in some type of sexual contact (vaginal intercourse, anal sex, oral) without proper protection is at risk of getting an STI/STD.

Anyone- no matter what the age can be at risk of getting one of these diseases which include, but are not limited too, HIV, herpes, chlamydia, syphilis, HPV, and gonorrhea. Symptoms for these different STI’s can be different depending on the one you have or even your biological gender. However, there are some common general symptoms that can be found no matter what. Some include pain or discomfort during sex or urination, discharge and/or bleeding from the genitals, and finally sores/bumps/rashes around your genital/mouth/anus/or thigh area.

Causes Of STDS

However, some STD’s may cause no symptoms at all so if you are engaging in any kind of unprotected sex, it’s important to get yourself tested so you are aware of what you may or may not have. If you do have an STI and you don’t get yourself treated then, depending on the particular infection, it can lead to very serious consequences and even death in some cases. Periodic testing can help solve this problem, but there other ways to insure you aren’t ever at risk of an STD or any risk you will have if you engage in sexual contact will be minimal.

One way to greatly reduce your risk of getting an STI or STD is by practicing safe sex

Items such as condoms are one way to do this. Condoms can be enteral and external. One can use them not only for vaginal or anal sex, but also for oral sex. Dental dams for oral sex or gloves for manual penetration with fingers is another example.

Some people think using condoms just isn’t comfortable or sexy

They may taste weird which is why they may not be used for oral sex or feel odd when it comes to insertion. However, while condoms are often made of rubber, they do come in other materials if you have a sensitivity and can also be flavored with a variety of different flavors. Simply saying you don’t like the feel, taste, etc. isn’t an excuse because there are many ways to get around it and find something you feel comfortable using during sex.

When using a condom, make sure you pay attention to how you put it on. Read the directions and even look up videos online if you feel you need it. No need to be embarrassed! There is nothing amusing or funny about trying to keep you and your partner safe during sexual activity.

Naturally being open and honest with your partner about past sexual experiences and getting tested every couple months is still very important. Condoms greatly does reduce the risk, but there still a small percentage you may get an STI/STD which is why you need to have open and honest conversations about this topic. By doing this, you have a better chance of staying safe and keeping future partners safe as well.
